FIRST AID TRAINING (ANNUAL UPDATE)
This online First Aid training course (Emergency First Aid at Work/ EFAW) is designed to provide an annual update for every first aider within their workplace. It is a compulsory training requirement set by the HSE that enables first aiders to provide immediate assistance to a casualty when someone is injured or taken ill at work. This course is developed by the First Aid professionals, in line with St John Ambulance and The UK Resuscitation Council practices. It covers important first aid knowledge that every first aider at work must know.
This course shows videos of practical skills and covers the correct procedures to be taken in a variety of first aid emergency situation. You will be able to learn how to assess and manage an emergency scene, identify and understand causes, signs and symptoms for every condition, provide first aid treatments with confidence and know how to use medical aids (e.g AED) and personal protective equipment (PPE).

This First Aid training course contains sixteen interactive modules and includes a brief assessment at the end of each module. These include:
Module 1: What is First Aid?
What is First Aid?- first aid term and statistics; casualty’s consent.
Module 2: Barriers, ABCDs and The Recovery Position
The Basics- the importance of wearing PPE; ABCD system to use in an emergency situation; recovery position.
Module 3: CPR and AED
CPR and AEDs – Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation(CPR) and how it works; CPR procedure in an emergency situation; the use of AED device and how it works.
Module 4: Choking
Choking- how choking occurs; consequences of choking; choking first aid practice; choking first aid treatment on pregnant women and overweight people.
Module 5: Bleeding
Bleeding- blood loss and its effect on the body; three types of bleeding; severe bleeding first aid treatment and shock position; how to bandage a wound.
Shock – situations in which shock may occur; shock signs and symptoms; shock first aid practice and process; when not to move a casualty who is experiencing shock.
Module 7: Spinal Injuries
Spinal Injuries- different types of spinal injuries; spinal injury and how its effects; causes of spinal injury; signs and symptoms of spinal injury; how to position a causally and call for help; how to position a casualty if no help is available.
Module 8: Breaks
Breaks- what is fracture; types of fractures; categories of fractures; signs and symptoms of a broken bone; first aid treatments for different types of fractures.
Module 9: Head Injuries
Head Injuries- concussion and how it occurs; severe head injuries and how they occur; sign and symptoms of concussion and serious head injury; head injury first aid treatment; post-injury treatment and GP visits; skull fractures; signs and symptoms of a skull fracture; first aid for skull fractures.
Module 10: Sprains
Sprains- when sprains occur; vulnerabilities; what happens when sprains occur; signs and symptoms of sprains; first aid treatment for sprains;
Module 11: Incident Management
Incident Management- how to approach an incident; how to assess an incident and make the area safe for help; how to call an ambulance; record keeping for medical assistance and work purposes; reporting of an incident.
Module 12: Burns and Scalds
Burns and Scalds- difference between a burn and scald; how burns or scalds occur; sunburn ; three types of burns; when to seek medical help immediately; first aid for burns; causes, signs and symptoms of a burn and its effect on a human body;first aid “DON’Ts” for burns; sunburn treatment and prevention.
Module 13: Electric Shock
Electric Shock- what happens when an electric shock occurs; the severity of the electric shock injuries; the effect of electricity on a human body; first aid treatment and practices for electric shock; electrical burns.
Module 14: Eye Injuries
Eye Injuries- types, causes, signs and symptoms of the eye injuries; first aid for a chemical eye injury; first aid treatment for a foreign body in the eye injury; reporting procedures.
Module 15: Epilepsy, Anaphylaxis and Diabetes
Epilepsy, Anaphylaxis and Diabetes- what is epilepsy; causes of an epileptic fit; signs and symptoms of an epileptic fit; first aid for epileptic fits; what is anaphylactic shock; causes, signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic shock; first aid treatment for anaphylaxis shocks; what is diabetes; types of diabetes; signs and symptoms of a diabetic fit; first aid treatment for two types of diabetic fits.
Module 16: Heart Attack and Stroke
Heart Attack and Stroke- what causes a heart attack; sign and symptoms of a heart attack; first aid treatment for heart attacks; what is a stroke; causes, signs and symptoms of a stroke; first aid for strokes.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This First Aid training course (EFAW) is for all first aiders, regardless of the settings they work in. It enables them to refresh their certificate and recap on the important first aid practices at work.

The online assessment is carried out on completion of each module. The pass mark for this course is 70%. You will be given the chance to review all videos and your answers at the end of each module before final submission. If you don’t pass, don’t worry! You can re-take each test up to 6 times with no extra charge.
